Totschnig was a megastar in his home country after that stage win. It will be another huge blow to Austrian and I suppose German cycling.

Totschning was a superb climber and you're correct, it would be another black mark.

Austria produced another great climber in Peter Luttenburger :

Joe Lindsey at Bicycling Magazine’s Boulder Report wonders if this scandal could prove to be larger than Operation Puerto. He says, “While over 100 blood bags were seized in the Operacion Puerto investigation, Sueddeutsche Zeitung reports that over 1,000 were seized from Humanplasma. Not a typo. Authorities suspect that as many as 200 athletes may be involved.” Hold on tight. It’s going to be a bumpy ride!

Thanks for that update, WBT.

Just as well the UCI have the bio-passport program. Which of course means that cycling is clean :p

To be honest I wouldn't mind a few other sports taking a hit.... just for once !

Austria has a very specific law which allows criminal investigation in such a case since September last year. Assuming that blood can't be conserved for all that long, those bags must have been filled after that date. So, likely, even when the corrupt sports federations would rather keep this quiet, the police and court system are likely obliged to investigate.

Which sport will it be? My first guess would be soccer and tennis.

You serious ? This is the country that shrugged it shoulders at an old bloke locking up his daughter for 24 years and father 29 of her 37 children.

Can see them brushing this under the carpet.

It has been more than eight years for Ullrich. How do they propose to ignore the time limit?

Gerolsteiner: I hope soemone names Leipheimer. It is ridiculous that in his mid-thirties he is way better than he was in his late twenties. At this rate when he hits forty he will be winning P-R, the Tour, and all the Olympic track events.

I'm aware of that case, not the specifics. Is there any evidence authorities knew about it before the story broke? Anyway, it's a single occurrence of a madman, and it's probably unfair to judge the police and court system based on this one (IIRC he was sentenced to life, so at least once the story broke, the system worked).

Remember the stage win myself. Another veteran rider pulled down. Doubtful that anyone can be truly clean in the peleton. During that stage, Totschning showed great strength and endurance to keep away from the closing peleton, as the rest of his breakaway riders were all caught by peleton.

Liquigas racer arrested in drug probe

By Agence France Presse
Posted Mar. 11, 2009

Italian Liquigas racer Gianni Da Ros was arrested on Wednesday in the northern city of Padua amid an investigation into the trafficking of banned doping products, the ANSA news agency reported.

Da Ros, 23, was arrested during a team run out at the Padua velodrome and was to be questioned Thursday by a Milan judge, ANSA reported.

The news agency added that the investigation at the behest of the Milan state prosecutor had seen 12 people arrested in total as well as 64 searches of properties across the country.

Aside from Da Ros, amateur racers, physios, gym staff and traders are caught up in the latest doping dragnet launched a year ago following a television report entitled "Muscles and Doping,” which purported to show how athletes could obtain doping substances from traders.

Liquigas said that it, along with the Italian cycling federation, had suspended the rider.

"Liquigas, like the Italian cycling federation, are completely in the dark about this business," the federation said in a statement. "The team's technical staff have provided all the help necessary to help the work of the police."
