Milky Way Snake
Our imaginations often see familiar "pictures" in the puffy white clouds
that dot the summer sky. The same thing happens with clouds in the NIGHT
sky -- clouds of gas and dust thousands of light-years from Earth. Some
of these clouds are dark and cold, so they block our view of the stars
behind them. Others glow brightly.
One bright cloud is called the Snake, and it's close to the heart of our
Milky Way galaxy. It's 150 light-years long and two or three light-years
across. Astronomers say it may consist of a strong electrical field --
like a bolt of lightning frozen in space.
The Milky Way's core is crowded with thousands of stars and giant clouds
of gas and dust. Some of these clouds generate energy as they move
through the galaxy's magnetic field, which is strongest near the core.
This interplay produces electrically charged "filaments" around the core
that could last for millions of years. The Snake is the largest of about
two dozen such filaments.
Most of the filaments are fairly rigid. But the Snake is a little
farther from the core than the others, where the magnetic field is
weaker, so the Snake "wiggles" a bit. This wiggling indicates that the
Snake may be falling apart.
We can't see the Snake with our eyes, but we CAN see its location in
space. It's in the constellation Sagittarius -- a teapot-shaped pattern
of stars that rises around sunset and wheels low across the south during
the night.

Massive Milky Way
If you can get away from city lights, this is a good time to gaze at the
Milky Way - the combined glow of millions of stars in the disk of the
Milky Way galaxy.
The stars that make up this band of light represent only a tiny fraction
of the galaxy's hundreds of billions of total stars. There's a lot more
to the Milky Way than just stars. In fact, most of the Milky Way doesn't
shine at all. Instead, it's made of dark matter - matter that produces
no detectable energy, but that reveals its presence through its
gravitational pull on the matter than we can see.
The dark matter populates an enormous halo that extends hundreds of
thousands of light-years beyond the Milky Way's disk.
Because of all this dark matter, the Milky Way is a massive galaxy. It
weighs roughly a trillion times more than the Sun. Astronomers reach
this number by watching galaxies that orbit the Milky Way. As a group,
these satellite galaxies move fast, indicating that the Milky Way has a
lot of mass. If it didn't, the galaxies are moving so fast that they
would escape the Milky Way's grip.
Look for the Milky Way arcing high across the sky a couple of hours
after sunset, from W-shaped Cassiopeia in the north, through the Summer
Triangle high overhead, to the hook shape of the scorpion low in the
south. And as you gaze into the Milky Way, think how the light you see
is only the tip of a very large - and very dark - galactic iceberg.

Athena's Birth
Zues came to lust after Metis, and chased her in his direct way. Metis
tried to escape, going so far as to change her form many times. Turning
into various creatures such as hawks, fish, and serpents. However, Zeus
was both
determined and
equally proficient at changing form. He continued his persuit until
she relented. An
Athena's Birth
Zeus came to lust after Metis, and chased her in his direct way. Metis
tried to escape,
An Oracle of Gaea then prophesied that Metis first child would be a girl
but, her second child would be a boy that would overthrow Zeus as had
happened to his father and grandfather. Zeus took this warning to heart.
When he next saw Metis he flattered her and put her at her ease. Then
with Metis off gaurd Zeus suddenly opened his mouth and swallowed her.
This was the end of Metis but, possibly the beginning of Zeus's wisdom.
After a time Zeus developed the mother of all headaches. He howled so
loudly it could be heard throughout the earth. The other gods came to
see what the problem was. Hermes realized what needed to be done and
directed Hephaestus to take a wedge and split open Zeus's skull. Out of
the skull sprang Athena, full grown and in a full set of armour. Due to
her manor of birth she has dominion over all things of the intellect.
