LINUX = Unicyclist

Since I've gotten my iBook G4 back in september to start my first year
of college, I don't know if I'll ever go back to windows. This computer
has been great to me! And I don't have to worry about virii and spyware
attacking my computer.

That is, free as in freedom not as in price!
And it's open source, so that, if you are some multinational or smaller
company are not depending on a OS that does things you don't know.

Like if you have a whole automized plant, with robots, and M$ decides to
drop some implementation you don't have a sudden costs. I have seen
companies who's suddenly had to pay a couple of millions to start
processes up again...!

Or like if you are developing a robot for bomb-detection you can be sure
about the data-security.

Opposit to the (telephone) tap-room hardware of the Israelian company
Syscom, who'd let all intercepted info by the CIA/FBI being sent to
Israel without them knowing it.

But for the average joe: you can debug common computer problems way
easier because it's verbose.

And that are just 2 reasons, there are endless reasons.

I recommend "Knoppix 3.7 (or 3.4)" or "Jollix"

Both are CDs that you can download for free, burn to CD, and use to
boot your computer. It is a great introduction to Linux, because you
don't have to install it. Not only that, but some people run CD based
operating systems FULL time. There are a ton of benefits in doing so
(including high security, more stability, and the ability to upgrade
entire LANs by remastering/upgrading the CD).

They are easy to find, simply search for the names in any major search
engine.

Thanks.

my computer's actually running w1ndows 95 right now.

I am a bit confused right now about open source. I use firefox, and I
love it. I though that it was free because it was open source, but some
versions of linux cost money.
so what exactly does open source really mean?

"Open source" may never benefit *you.* It just means that the source
code of each program is available for modification. Unless you are a
programmer or pay one, you may never get the full benefit of open source
software.
(For simplicity, I'm barring some of the general positives like the fact
that because the source is available to everyone, people fix it faster,
and you get legal access to the fixed version.)

That said, both CDs that I mentioned above come with Firefox and
hundreds of other programs installed.

In a sense, the CDs are "closed source" because you will not find the
source code on the CD and everything is prepackaged. One has to go
through a few more steps to modify the source code of programs on a CD.
Nonetheless, you have the ability to modify any aspect of the entire
system (unlike the leading operating systems).

The bottom line is that open source enables you to download and use the
CDs legally without paying someone.

Heh :)

Yeah, I work @ ARIN, this is actually the last month I'm working there
before I go back to Austria.
If you ever get the chance to get into RIPE do it, I know many people
from RIPE who love their job. There is nothing better than working at an

Hahahahaaha, I just don't believe you.
If you want to get Linux up and running, you HAVE to read. Without
reading it won't work. Go ahead, and read the documentation your
distribution has available for you on their homepage.

Unfortunately, that is the asinine response that ripples through this
community with pride. Some people like knowing things that others don't.
A lot of the professionals that I keep in touch with pride themselves in
esoteric knowledge and then scoff at other people who don't get joy by
reading (often complex) manual pages.

Contrarily, if you pad every response with "I looked for it and read"
you won't get that knee-jerk response. (I know, I have said "I've read
it" when I haven't just to get past that). Still, the Linux community is
much like this Unicycle community. Definately leagues better than the
Microsoft counterparts.

this is totally the wrong place to ask that question, but:

you just need KNOPPIX_V3.7-2004-12-08-EN.iso 698.99 MB [09-Dec-04] [ISO
image]

An ISO Image is a CD image, you burn that, and you're done.

mirrors are mutlitple servers for the same data, you usually choose one
that's near you to avoid heavy internet traffic.

md5 and sha1 are hashing algorithms to verify the source ISO - forget
about this, if you don't know what that means.

Well, I went through the same hell. If you don't read, and flood any
forum with questions that are already answered, nobody will be pleased
to answer you.
The question was like asking in this forum: How do I freemount?

What's the answer? Read our already written instructions, and do trial
and error - same answer work for his question.

Didn't want to be rude, and this is way way way way way off topic. But
be aware, that a Linux is not as easy to use as a Windows, and not as
beautiful as a Mac OS X.

I object ;)
Most people are used to Windows and/or Mac, which are different beasts
then Linux. Reading documents to know how to use Linux would be the
same as having to read to use Windows. Yes, people have to read to use
Windows. My dad has had to buy a new book for every version of Windows
since 3.1.

The most important thing to do is get Knoppix, and just try it. KNoppix
is a good start, boot off the cd and you can't fsck up your comp :)
