Little rubber tube in repair kits

In every repair kit is a little rubber tube, a cm or two long and a mm
or two wide.

What is it for? I suspect its got something to do with valve repair,
is it used on Presta valves or something else?

You must be pretty young.

The tube is for valve repair.
They were effective and worked.

It's for replacing the little rubber tube in a Dunlop, (aka Woods) valve. See http://www.sheldonbrown.com/gloss_w.html#woods. When I were young, my purple Malvern Star Dragstar used Dunlop valves.

Of course, Dunlop valves have been impossible to get since the Eighties, but nobody thought to tell the people making the patch kits.

Much the same as "PC repair kits", which invariably come with a tool for removing DIP socketed DRAMs.

Cheers,

Suzy

LOL!! And here's me thinking that it was for spreading the glue around on the tube:eek:

Spot on, a communique should be immediately sent to those thousands of factories in China/Taiwan/India still producing this obsolete component. Think of all that rubber they'll save. Or something.

Ok, tour time.

Also, they re-designed the dunlop valve so the tube wasn't required. You can still find the re-designed parts for a Dunlop valve. I picked up a few a couple of years back for the valves in an old golf buggy. (its on my list to convert it into a trailer)
