If the stem will be clamped onto the threaded portion, nothing, don't
use it. If you can cut the threaded portion off, and then clamp onto
the non-threaded part-OK. If nothing else, if the threads are low
enough, convert to threaded HS and stem.

Thank you for your help. The stem is well below the threaded section. I'm
really new to all this threadless stuff, is it the stem that holds the fork
on or the cap and bolt?

Need a 'star fangled nut'' pressed into the fork end, with a bolt and
cap, that is used to adjust the HS. Once adjusted, the stem bolts hold
the adjustment and the stem onto the steerer.
