Looking for a bike

Can you give a price range you're willing to spend? that would be a huge help for anyone trying to answer this question, without that you're going to get a wide assortment of prices as everyone tries to sling mud onto a silicone wall to see who's mud will stick, there is just too many bikes on the market to start flinging so you need to get us closer.

Also would you consider mail order or does that scare you and you are only interested in bikes found at your LBS's in town?

Off the top of my head Bikes Direct, a mail order company, sells a VERY nice and highly reviewed titanium Motobecane Fantom Cross Comp bike that is designed for cyclocross as well as riding on the street and for light touring because it has fender mounts AND rear rack braze ons so you could use it for touring, but since the fork is carbon fiber there is no braze ons for either a fender or rack on the front due to the carbon fiber fork. The bike is equipped with disk brakes and the highly reliable SRAM Rival transmissions, and being made of titanium rust and corrosion is a non happening thing, and TI is very durable and comfortable to ride, and will last a lifetime and then some, it will be the last cross bike you'll ever buy.

Anything less or even a more expensive than the above bike will not get you titanium until you get into the $3,500 range. If you're looking at spending less than a $1,000 [censored] Sporting Goods sells the Diamondback Haanjo for about $960, it does come with very reliable Shimano 105 transmissions but the frame is aluminium and it will be heavier than the Motobecane, it also has disk brakes and rack and fender mounts but only on the rear and not the front due to the carbon fiber fork. [censored] sells this bike for $1,300 but a mail order place called JensonUSA has it for about $960 but at least you can go and see the bike at [censored].

Those two bikes are great for the money but as you can see there isn't a lot of difference in price between the lessor quality Diamondback and the superior Motobecane. Bikes Direct also sells another Cross Titanium bike for more money but equipped even better but the frame is identical to the less expensive one.

My budget is under $1000. Right now, I'm leaning towards the Kona Rove. I'd be willing to consider mail order, but generally feel more comfortable going through my local shop in order to make sure I get the right size.

The Kona is a great bike for the price, if you like that bike than get it. Kona's have the best price point on the LBS marketplace, meaning you'll get a bit more for your money then going with the usual list of LBS characters like Trek, Specialized, Cannondale, Giant, etc.

I found a 2004 Kona Lava Dome in a trash dumpster about 6 years ago and gave it to my daughter because it didn't fit me after I cleaned and fixed it up, she really likes the bike as I did too. That would definitely be the option I would go with if I didn't want to go mail order.
