Looking for a quality used double road crankset

Hi there,

As the selection of quality used parts at bicycle shops across the
country has declined over recent years due to people selling all their
good stuff on Ebay, I thought I would try a different tactic and post
to this list, as I rarely see this particular item on Ebay.

I am looking for a quality used road crankset with the following
characteristics:

double (two chainrings)
170 mm cranks
6/7/8 sp compatible
square taper
small chainring: 39 t or less

Someone must have exactly what I'm looking for sitting in his garage,
like all of you who have moved on to 9- and 10sp systems.

Contact me off-list if you have something like this that you're willing
to part with. Thanks ~

I have such a crank in my shop, but I'm hesitant to get rid of it. I
can't tell you how many times a 10-year-old part in my shop has saved
my ass for some reason.

I think you should go to an LBS and ask to see their scrap parts. I got
a pair of nice LX MTB cranks for free from the local REI. They had a
box of cranks and brakes from upgrades. The cranks are scratched up a
bit with semi-worn rings, but they work great, and they're $225 new
retail.

Hard to believe there's not a shop near you that has a bunch of doubles,
new, that came off brand new bikes that someone wanted as a triple. What
area of the country do you live? If it's the SF Bay Area, there are
certainly many shops with them; we have a number that we'll be taking to a
swap meet at the end of the month.

By the way, don't get hung up on the number of gears. If you find a cheap
'105 take-off, go for it. even though it's an Octalink, you might get a
great buy on both crank & bb.

Sorry we can't sell you one directly, but Shimano doesn't allow shops to
sell via eBay or mail-order, unless they've signed all manner of paperwork
and jumped through some hoops. Yes, I know, everybody does anyway, but we
stick to the rules. It's a pain, because we've got a lot of stuff going
nowhere, but much gets donated to Trips for Kids, a worthy organization, so
it's not all bad.

PS: This really should be posted in rec.bicycles.marketplace

There is a news group specifically for these questions.

actually, i've had my eye on something matching this description on
ebay: http://tinyurl.com/mt9gx
it's supposedly a new campy veloce double, 39t small ring, square
taper, 170mm cranks, $50. i think someone else on ebay might even have
them for a bit less.
i have no current need for a crankset, but have been thinking of
picking up one of these since it seems like a good price. don't know if
there's some hidden gotcha with these cranks or what...

IMO, the current fashion of "compact double" cranks means a surplus of
conventional doubles, hence the lower prices.

Be aware, however, that Campy's 135mm BCD (v. the more "conventional"
130mm BCD) means your choice of chainrings is both more limited and
somewhat more expensive. That said, it's a really nice crank for $50
(they're $99 at Nashbar).
