Loose Headset=Screeching Brakes?

Screeching brakes during my chilly NE USA commute tonight and I got to
thinking about the pulsing I feel in the handlebars as I pull the front
brake lever to engage the notoriously loud Avid Shorty cantis.

The hanger is near the top of the headset stack between a thin spacer and
the lock nut. Anyway maybe the pulsing is a loose headset. If so, could that
be causing an extraordinarily loud screeching?

Don't have the time or inclination to mess with adjusting the headset
unless the noise is signaling me to.

you /do/ need to adjust the headset. and you need to adjust some toe
into the pads. i do it using a strip of card under the rear of the pad,
then apply the brake in the normal fashion while tightening the pad's
orbital adjuster.
