Hi. My wife has an old schwinn world that she adores. Recently the handlebars became wobbly, so I removed the fork and stem to see what the problem was (1" threaded). When I took the stem off the little angled thing that goes in the headtube that the stem screws into came out with it (i.e. you can pull the stem out without unscrewing *anything*). How is this piece supposed to be held in the head tube? How do I get it back in there properly? Nothing appears to be cracked or broken, and I'd rather not spend any money on such an old bike taking it to the bike shop, so if anyone has any home remedies I'd love to hear them. Thanks.

Thanks.The little angled thing is called a wedge.It's supposed to be attached to the end of the stem by the stem bolt. Put it back in the steerer,tighten the stem bolt and the wedge does it job of holding the stem tight in the steerer.It's one of the great mysteries of the universe.

Thanks.The first thing you need to do is get the wedge out of the headtube (this could be as easy as tipping the bike upside down, or you may have to use the screw from the stem and attempt to thread it into the wedge to pull it out of the headtube). After you have the wedge, you need to match that piece up with the complementing angle on the stem and then loosely thred the screw back into both pieces. Then, you can insert the stem (which now has the wedge attached) back into the head tube, and once it is on straight and everything, simply tighten the screw down the rest of the way.
