so which bike should I get?

I leave 10 mins walk from the station, will need to leave the bike at the station, so nothing expensive, and obviously no quick release.

mountain or road, no idea. the last bike i owned was a $1200 learsport mountain bike, the one with really thick swing arm (if you know which bike i'm talking about)

    thanks

If you're going to be leaving it at the station, you should probably look at flat bar road bikes, and then probably down the cheaper end of the scale.

FWIW, Vivente do reasonably priced flat bar.

Where are you based? If you're Melbourne based get over to the Bicycles Victoria forums. Lots of helpful advice over there, especially if you decide you want to actually commute to work by bicycle.

    Try these forums then .....
Australian Cycling Forums • Index page - I haven't been on them for a long time, since I moved to Melbourne, but they used to have quite a bit of useful stuff on there.

And what I said about Vivente bikes still holds - the Vivente Novara Sport retails for around $699 and is a sturdy little bike (but I'm biased coz I own one).

    4 years?
    You've obviously got form.
I'm sorry but I need more details to give you good advice.
    What's your inseam?
Did you kill Carl Williams? Why?
And always make sure your saddle is level at all times.

Speaking of Carl, his bike isn't being used right now.Maybe it will come up on ebay and you could get a bargain.
You might need a new saddle and seatpost, unless you can scrub the brains out.
Shouldn't be difficult, there wasn't much there to start with.
