  1. I've had a mostly off and on relationship with running for a long time. I'm a 42 year old, 5' 8",
that had been mostly off and tried to get started last summer. After a couple of weeks, things are
work got really messy and I wound up taking the easy way out and gave up the running. My weight had
ballooned to about 205. I was concerned as putting on socks was a nuisance. I don't believe in New
Year resolutions, I believe if one wants to do something, they don't need to wait for the first of
the year to start. Getting through the holidays had taken it's puffy toll and come the end of
January, I made the commitment to get a treadmill. It was delivered on Thursday, Jan. 30th evening.
The very next morning I started the routine. It took time and energy to build up stamina. I was
doing about 2.5 miles. I got the rythym of a 40 minute session including warm up and cool down. As I
become more comfortable, I moved to 45 minutes. Not only did I start this exercising, I became more
consicious of my eating habits. I love to eat and love to watch the food channel. I remember
watching the Galloping Gourmet as a youngster. I watched all that I was eating and started daily
vitamins. At first I had cut back on calories and cut out certain things from my diet. I restricted
to no white bread, no more soda's, no rice, pasta, potato's, fatty or wasting calorie foods. I'm
eating lots of fish and salads of many different creations. At this point, I've had to increase my
calories to keep up with all the running I'm doing. I'm doing about 40 miles a week and look at my
core run of 60 minutes excluding warm up and cool down as a solid daily workout. On an easy run, I'm
doing 10 minute miles and cut up six+ miles. I'm working speed training in to my routine and ran
8:30 miles for three miles the other day and felt very strong. I am doing long runs on one of the
days of the weekend, doing 12-13 miles in two hours. I've accumulated a number of free weights over
the years, always thinking this would help me reduce my weight and stay fit. As a result of better
conditioning, I've started lifting on a regular basis. Considering how out of touch I had been, it's
easy to see improvements. To date, I have only run one 5k many years ago. I am looking forward to my
second race. To date, I've lost 36 pounds and feel wonderful. I've dropped from a snug 38 jean to a
snug 33 and very comfortable and loose 34. I know I have some body fat that I'd like to rid of. It's
been fun and I love the results that are coming of this.

    Happy trails, Jake

  2. Well done, Jake. Thanks for the success story, which will be inspirational for those who peek into
rec.running because they are thinking about embarking on a similar journey but don't necessarily
believe it's possible. Cheers and happy running. Chris

    Congrats on your results, Jake.

I also dropped from a similar weight over a year or so, and while your results are impressive, I
think that on the training you are doing, you will continue to make improvements.

Please do hang around and keep us posted on your race results.

    Cheers,

  5. Good job, Jake. You've come a long way in a very short time. Be careful of burnout though. Remember
that long term goals are pretty important too. Michelle jake <[email hidden]> wrote in
