Louisville KY area MUni Rendezvous, June 05

One dude says "I've been riding these trails since the mid-90s.
Incredble singletrack . A lot of technical and challenging routes.
Gorgeous views."

Site says 15 miles of trails. Apparently it loops around and
crisscrosses itself alot.

Spoke with Jack West at Otter Creek. He says we should have absolutely
no problem getting our sites that weekend. Memorial Day is the weekend
before ours. That, he says, will be rather full. But not June 3,4,5.

There are 100+ sites. No reservations for campsites unless you'll need
10 or more sites. If we want elec. hookups, its $18. If not, $16. If we
go to the Primitive area (no electric in site), we can do whatever we
want. It'll be all ours. It doesn't matter to the Maxwells whether there
is elec. or not. We're well equipped.

If we need 10 campsites, they will take reservations. Its one family to
a site. They discourage too many tents on the same site. (But if there
are two, they won't do anything). Jack was so intrigued with the
Mountain Unicycle aspect, I think he'll be flexible in our case. I bet I
can get us reservations with 7 or 8 or 9.

We're 1/2 way there...

As for b*king restrictions, stay on the trails or the roads. There is a
"red cedar trail" that horses use that they'd rather we avoid. I said
we'd rather avoid it too. He says they have lots of Mountain B*kers
using the park regularly.

I still prefer electric, but if it's best for the overall group, we can
go without electric. Thanks for doing all the legwork on this outing,
Tom. It's shaping up very nicely, mostly do to your efforts!

Sounds like a hefty wobble of cyclists from Chicago. Plenty of room.
(Its the great outdoors after all).

We'll go for power. I've been assured by the Rangers that it really
shouldn't be an issue. But don't fret. We are well prepared with gas
lights and stoves. Lets pretend for a moment we don't have power in the
site. The only appliance I can think of that might need some juice is
billham's computer. This is important because that's how we enjoyed the
day's slideshow and videos at FURECUS04. Viewing the day's escapades is
a hoot. But, the working motto of our Girl Scout troop is "we'll have to
adapt". Maybe we can run a cord from the Bath-house or hike down to the
common pavilion for a bit. Its a little problem. I don't run an
airconditioner or satellite TV...(Its the great outdoors after all)

I vote even stronger for power. My wife and I may be buying a used RV
soon (very used, so we can afford it). Gotta have power for all the
toys on board. Don't worry, we'll still be enjoying the great
outdoors.

If we had someone not riding, we could let them shoot lots of pics and
video. Then we could have a big time show at night. It would be fun to
watch lots of video of the day's riding, but I have too much fun riding
to shoot a bunch of video.

Looking forward to the weekend and bummed I can't make it to Alabama.

(Off-topic casual question)

Isn't that in contradiction with "Be Prepared", the motto that BP
himself gave to Scouting?

The motto for the Boy Scouts is "Be Prepared". I was one many years ago.

The symbol on the patch of my daughter's Girl Scout uniform is a
lightning bold because, for a while, every time we went camping, it
rained on us. Once we changed our plan from a hike to the overlook, to a
cave tour.

Once we forgot salt...we used lemon juice.

Once, a girl cut her finger. On campouts, I always keep about a foot of
duck tape, folded up into a little square, in my pocket (prepared). With
no band-aids easily accessible, we used a tiny bit of a napkin and a 1/2
inch x 3 inch strip of duck tape to make a bandage. (adapted)

I regret that I cannot quote the official Girl Scout Motto. But the
un-official motto of our troup is "A good Girl Scout adapts".

Incidentally, I keep one of those little squares of duck tape in my
camelback, car, wife's car, suitcase, winter jacket pocket, etc. I've
used them to make temporary shoelaces, tarp repair, leak in canoe
repair, trunk tie-down, noise reduction of buzzing car's convertible top
on highway trip that was making us all insane, sunglasses repair (yes,
for a while I looked very nerdy, but I was alone on a sailboat on a very
sunny day).

Once, while MUni-ing, I came up on a Mtn B*ker who's seat was busted and
wouldn't stay still on his b*ke. It joggled all around and fell off with
every big bump. The solution? I think you know. The outcome? Smiling
(and sitting) Mountain B*ker.

What's the latest on this event? Tom, I'm sure you've been busy working
on SHONUF. Sure wish I could make that, but schedule and distance are
stopping. Sigh. So instead, I'm thinking about Kentucky. Yeah!

How many people are planning to attend in Kentucky? I'm starting a list
to get a total and see if reservations would make sense? Previous post
shows we would need ten sites for a reservation. Without reservations,
even if everyone can get a site, we might be scattered around. It's
much better to get all the campsites together. Hope you don't mind me
jumping in with this suggestion, Tom.

Please list ONLY if you are a DEFINITE attendee. List who (and how
many) will be coming with you. Please mention number of unicyclists
also.

Number Attending:
3 people - Bill Hamilton (billham), wife & daughter (8 yr old) - 2
unicyclists

Save up your coins and either spring for a beefier ride or get your
rolling right. I will be toting along some extra unis. However, they
will probably be the club's Torkers.

I'll contact the campsite folks soon, and give a report here.

Be sure to check the very first post in this thread (and other early

My family will be arriving Friday afternoon.
