I am generally against the use of extraneous sound-producing
devices while in charge of a vehicle. I usually don't even
have the radio on in the car, and tend not even to talk to
my passengers either, as I like to employ all my sense of
sound and vision, and general capacity for focusing
attention on the task in hand, to what the car and traffic
going on around me is doing. Same when riding of course.
However I must confess that the other day I did ride with a
radio, and a single earpiece in one ear to listen to a
program I didn't want to miss. I could still hear the
traffic and it wasn't too distracting - I survived!

You can go for a week on a 35mm film canister of soup? Or do
you just keep the stone in the canister and persuade the
villagers to contribute the rest of the ingredients?

Any trip involving overnight stay:

Travel radio (I don't watch TV and B&Bs can lack
serviceable radios)

12oz plastic mug (I like to drink sensible amounts of
tea/coffee without faffing about refilling the cup)

Box of tricks containing sachets of instant hot chocolate &
soup, coffee, tea, sugar, milk powder and a teaspoon.

Wide variety of miniaturised toiletries + alarm clock all
easily contained in a small pencil case.
