Anyone ridden the M5 Shockproof 559 yet?

It seems from the M5 page that it comes with sidepulls for brakes??
No V's. No hope of a Magura rim break.... is it true??
(Strange specs for what looks like a pretty decent touring bike.)

Anyway just after impressions from someone whose ridden one.

Thanks,

Tom

I haven't ridden one. But look at the return side chaintube on that
bike. It's like having a portable amusement ride for your chain.
Bacchetta, RANS, and others who manufacture recumbents with matching
large wheels (559,650,700C) appear to have taken advantage of the
frame configeration to avoid chaintubes. Air has less friction than
plastic, does not wear out, and is much quieter.

Judging by the performance of M5's other bikes I doubt thats a problem, I
have the same configuration on my Optima Baron. It would be quieter with the
tube because without it the chains would scrape against themselves and I've
got several thousand miles on mine without any real wear.

Neither Rans or Bacchetta use an angled frame like M5 which is why it is
routed it that way, you also see it with Challenge.

I agree, chain routing should not be a problem. But what about those
brakes!! WHY WHY WHY?
The only reason I can see is for the silly monoblade issues.. Will
there be enough power to stop 120kg of bike and rider when touring??

My guess is disc brakes would put it over what they wanted to price it at, I
doubt they'd put brakes on any bike they make that they felt couldn't do the
job

I am interested in the Shokproof as a touring bike, and had the chance to
see it at Cycle Vision. They had two versions on the stand:
-The CrMo 559 with mono blade an side pull brakes
-The Titanium 559 with Magura hydraulic brakes

At this moment they do not offer front suspension, but you can use most
26? suspension forks. This makes it possible to use a front disk brake.

Whoooa there Mark - these guys make great bikes thats certain.

BUT remember they specked the Baron at 90kg max load!! Surely they
expect some of their customers and their kit to weigh more than this?
How can I trust them to get a brake type right when they think all
their customers are race bred whippets, no the slightly overloaded
reality of recumbent riders?

I suspect that the brakes are specd that way to make this bike look
'roadie' and not like a pedestrian load hauling tourer. Something to
trap the Bacchetta crowd I suspect.

My cycnical side also thinks this allows them to price it below the
magic 2000 euro mark.

I'm sure the brakes will stop the bike, but it just seems a little
strange given that this bike would make an excellent tourer. (well I
spose I'm also whinging because I _want_ it to be the perfect touring
bike I've been searching for ... :)

I guess it's a try it before you buy it. Guessing if it will work correctly
or not just by looking at it won't cut it

(Keeps one from becoming another Lorenzo Love :) )

I doubt they did it for that reason otherwise they'd have added discs
instead

Problem is since no reviews exist and none of us has tested it yet we don't
know what the bike is capable of

Actually, if you look at the Optima website you'll see that the Baron
now has the return side of it's chainline routed with idlers instead
of chaintubes. I have a M5 bike, and I feel that chaintubes are a
problem.

Hmm not a reality in the southern Hemisphere I have to make decisions on reviews.

I await the northern hemisphere reviews with baited breath.

Well sounds like the titanium might just be the one I need then - But
I think its specd with lower load capacity.

Or as you suggest use the CrMo with with a normal front fork and disc
setup.

How was the chin line on the version with a two bladed fork
(titanium)? Did it rub on the shoulder of the fork?

True but it still has the top of the chain in a tube which is how mine is
routed, without it the chains would clash. Obviously I'd have to ride with
and without to tell any difference but if one exists I doubt I'd feel it. A
more common fix is to remove that idler which improves efficiency although
turning is more of a problem, I've kept mine on for that reason.

Which M5 do you have?
