I started a running routine 3.5 months ago that follows the Maffetone philosphy. Starting with 15
minute runs, I've worked my way up to 45 min runs at my Maximum Aerobic Function, excluding warmup
and cool down times. So far so good - no injuries and I haven't gotten sick. I continue to add
minutes with each passing week. A few burning questions:
1. Maffetone suggests using the formula 180-AGE with some modifiers to determine your MAF. While
I've been following this formula, I am not confident of its accuracy. I'll be doing a VO2 MAX
test at a lab in a few weeks - how do I incorporate that data so I have a more accurate MAF?
2. Do I need to perform a MAF test for each activity that I do? I've only been doing one for
running. I bike and climb too.
3. I am having alot of trouble maintaining a steady heart rate when I do these tests. Anyone
else have that problem? Its kind of a pain - modify up, down, etc ,etc...constantly have to
watch the HRM.
4. My pace is only slightly faster than walking. When am I gonna get faster??! :-).
