Mapping Software?

Does anyone out there have a recommendation for good software to use for making ride maps? I would like to have a printer friendly map that I can hand out to a group of people. The problem I've encountered with Google Maps is when you start getting longer distances (i.e. 50-100 miles) all of the details are lost. The cross streets are pretty critical when someone gets lost. With Google Maps, you usually can't even tell what road you're on, let alone cross roads. I came across one here that I really like, http://www.horriblyhilly.com/maps/HHH_Map_200K.pdf but I have no idea how they made it. Don't most clubs hand out maps at the beginning of a ride?

Anyone have any suggestions on useful mapping software out there? If it could take a route off of a GPS or Google Earth that would be great, but not necessary.

Have you checked out Brad Culberson's Course Creator: http://cc2.bradculberson.com/flex/bin/CourseCreator.html

It can be powered by several different mapping engines, but makes it real easy to drop markers to map a route and also get course profiles. You have to set up an account, but it's free. I use it all the time to get insight into out of town road races and time trials.

I've seen that one before and I've used it for making routes for my GPS. I'm looking for something more suitable for making print outs for club rides. We want to hand out something at the beginning of a ride to be sure no one gets lost 30 miles from home. I've seen some nice ones on organized rides so I'm just trying to find the software the organizers use.

Although the Topo data is nice.

Go to MapMyRide. They have all you need, including automatic generation of cue sheets.

That's pretty much the problem with ALL mapping software. I still find it better to photocopy a good road map and hilite the route. Alternatively, I've scanned a part of a road map, and edited it in Photoshop.

Since i haven't been out cycling for some time, i did some research for this mapping softwares, so if you use your GPs phone you might want to take a look at these:
Mapmytracks for iphone, sportypal and endomondo for WM and android type of phones.
