I am in the 19th week of a 24 week training schedule for a marathon. This will be my sixth marathon,
and I've been running 35 miles a week year round for the last eight years. I've run 40 to 50 mile
weeks since late January/early February. This is the first time that I've used any speed training.
Last Saturday I did a twenty miler. I felt great and had no trouble completing the run, but started
to experience some slight knee pain during the last two miles. My right leg was stiff for the
remainder of that day. I felt a tightness, tenderness and a little swelling on the back of my leg
just under the knee on the upper/outside of the calf. On Sunday I had planned to run six miles
incorporating one fast mile. I ran two miles and realized I was being stupid. I stopped. On Monday
the pain moved up into the lower thigh muscle, still on the back outer part of my right leg. I have
done no running since Sunday. The pain seems to be lessening each day, but last night I was awakened
several times because that knee was hurting. I was suppose to race in a 15K on Saturday. I suppose
that that's out now. Does anyone recognize this injury? Did I do something to cause this? I'm fairly
certain that I will be able to resume training next week. How much will this week's lay off affect
my progress? I had been so excited to see my times coming down. I was training for a 4:05 marathon.
Will that be impossible now? Thanks for any advice anyone can offer. Michelle

Hi,
Your injury sounds familiar. I have had this a couple of times after extensive training sessions
on concrete. My experiences with knee injuries have been quite bad though to the point of taking pills and having
injections. I had an inflammation in the knee but I am sure that your case is not as bad. You have
probably just overdone somewhere. What I have learned is that it is better to run on the roadside
where it is softer or better even, in the woods. Aslo the type of shoes you wear is very important -
cushioning in the front and in the back to keep you from the chock. What to do now - I would go to a specialist if the pain does not go away of itself in a couple of
days and don't exercise at the moment as it will make it only worse. Knees are delicate things and
you want to look after them. A week's lay-off does you no harm but I know what it feels to have to
stay inside for more than a couple of days.Best of luck Kadri
