I recently upgraded my forks to a Z5 series Bomber and I'm loving it's performance, although it has raised my handlebar height, and the overall weight of my front end. I'm not a weight weenie, But the added weight and the increased height has made doing something's harder. I was wondering how difficult It would be to shorten the steertube and remove a couple of spacers. Is it something I can handle on my own "keeping in mind I'm an engineer by trade", or should I take it in to a shop to be safe?
I'm also Considering changing the steertube completely to something lighter, Aluminium, or carbon.
I most likley would't change the steertube height until I replace the tube, I don't believe in doing the same job twice. Any tips on either subject would be appreciated.

Good idea to make your LBS do it, they migt do it for free. It will take max 2 minutes. Otherwise its pretty easy to do it yourself. If you want to remove 1 inch og spacers then remove 1 inch of steering tube, thats easy. Watch out that you dont cut the starnut :-) So you might wanna knock it down an inch before cutting.
If it sounds difficult, then ask your LBS.

Thanks Greg
I wouldn't change the steer tube unless you're willing to send it back to Marzocchi to have them do it.
As far as cutting, you can do it yourself with a hacksaw or pipe cutter. It's pretty easy, but yes a shop can do it for you if you're not confident.

I have cut a Marzocchi steerer tube, and it is damn hard work. Those things are tough. What I would suggest is, cut a mm or 2 above where you want it done to. Then file off anything else (being an engineer Im sure you can do this easily enough) As in the past I have had to cut it twice, due to the thickness of the blade (and cutting *on* the line) I got it shorter than I wanted.

Its a pretty straightforward job, although you did say you were an engineer so.... Anyway you're jumping the gun a bit. You should be able to swap the spacers from below the stem to above the stem, in this way you can experiment with stem height. Only when you're happy that you've found a height you're happy with should you consider cutting the steerer to the correct length.
