I don't want this to come across as too low brow, this is a
legitimate

the guy as the one who needs to feed the child. Would it
draw the attention of other jealous larger males or jealous
females? Is there a significance here?

My main guess: each makes noises that their partner finds
stimulating and
and emphasise this difference;
Another common explanation is that the noises provide
feedback to the partner.
about - since /sometimes/ the participants use words.
Listen to what they say, and you'll probably get a fair
idea about what sorts of things the non-spoken stuff is
all about.
