Aussie cyclist White out of China trip

A training crash has left Australian cyclist Matt White with a fractured skull, forcing him out of a national team that is heading to China.

White suffered the injury on Tuesday while training near his home in Valencia, Spain.

Cycling Australia high performance director Shayne Bannan confirmed the hairline fracture, but said White was in good spirits.

"He's obviously disappointed he can't go to China, but he will be okay," Bannan said.

White was part of an Australian team that will contest pre-Olympic road races in Beijing on August 18-19.

The team will feature Tour de France stars Cadel Evans and Michael Rogers, who joined the squad earlier this week.

Athens gold medallist Sara Carrigan and top Australian women's rider Oenone Wood will also be on the trip, although the races will be men-only.

The main purpose for the trip will be to thoroughly research the courses and conditions for the Olympic road races and time trials.

Bannan said it was too late to replace White on next week's team.
