As the posts you referenced have pointed out, the rear hub is a crappy
design with a plastic bushing at the base of the freehub body that
needs a lot of cleaning and oiling, oil, not grease. mavic called it
'pawl dust' and made the pawls harder but it's just poor design, cheap
parts, bad form all around. AND for the $, not sure what anybody
gets..poor hub, wacky aluminum spokes, less reliability, no weight
savings..when compared to a campag or shimano hub, rims, spokes, made
well.

I am pretty sure mavic does not specify a weight limit on their ES's
but they will definitly be better suited for a lighter rider. As was
mentioned previously mavic hubs are not the best. Every mavic hub I
get in the shop has slop in the freehub body will "paw dust" in the
ratchet mechanism. This is interesting since I have been running mavic
helium's and the first mavic cross lands where they used a cartridge
bearing instead of the bushing and the paw's have stayed quite clean
and haven't had any problems with "paw dust." In short, if you are
looking at a new set of wheels I would look elsewere.

Now, I'm inclined to agree with most of the criticisms leveled at
Ksyriums, but I'd argue that the freehub isn't so much badly designed
as improperly marketed.

Regardless of whether or not Ksyriums wheels are lighter than
conventional wheels, given the minimalist design, I find it hard to
believe that the Mavic freehub isn't lighter. There's simply so little
metal inside it.

Seems to me what Mavic did was turn the freehub into an ultralight
consumable part, kind of like aluminum cassettes or paper-thin tires,
all of which have legitimate uses despite their problems.

Mavic's decision to use that design on enthusiast-level product is
indeed hard to defend. What's even more surprising to me is the
willingness of bike manufacturers to spec these as stock wheels. You
would think the warranty issues would scare them away.
