Sam,
You probably just need a rebuild kit, O-rings and Backers. Should be able to
get this at the LBS or order from Fox. No real special tools required to
rebuild. I have a 17 Meg video that I found on the web from Fox that shows
the complete rebuild and installation. I don't think I can email a 17 Meg
video but I'm sure with a little searching you can find it.
My guess is that the grease in shock has dried up for it to lock as you
described with out any external damage. Another quick and dirty method to
fix until the end of the season might be to do the following:
While the shock is still on the bike unscrew the main body. (NOTE: First
remove all the air pressure from the shock before doing anything) The main
body will slide back showing the main piston and the O-Rings. You might be
able to grease the internals to get you though the season and then send off
or fix... When you take off and put back on the main body it will under some
pressure and may be tough to push forward to screw back on. Use the
mechanics of the bike to assist you with this. Be sure to get a good thread
alignment on the main body (don't cross threads)...
You might also want to post to rec.bicycles.tech seems like alot of actual
bike mechanics reply there as to which I'm not.
Good luck,
