I found some recipes. It's actually called Masala Chai. The spice I
was smelling was cardamom. If anyone is curious, here are the ingredients:

water cardamom clove black peppercorns black tea leaves milk sugar

proportions are to taste. All ingredients are steeped, except sugar and
milk.

This is the only tea i like. Most grocery stores actually carry this in teabag form. While not as
good as at an Indian restaurant, i find it to be a passable substitution. Steep the tea bags in
barely simmering milk for apprx 5 minutes, then add honey or sugar to taste. Makes a lovely relaxing
warm beverage. I prefer mine unsweetened though.
