Question for eastern suburb Melbournites.

I'm moving to Mont Albert in April/May and will be looking for a new LBS to look after me. Having a quick search, the following stores seem to be the closest. If anyone has a recomendation or some experience with these guys...I'd appreciate it.

Top Gear Cycles - Doncaster Road
Cycle Works - Whitehorse Road
BikePro - Whitehorse Road

I want someone who will do top quality servicing and not be over the top in pricing.

Thanks for your input Phillip  . I take it you're suggesting that this is hard to find, but I currently get this level of service at Abbotsford Cycles. If I find that these 3 LBS' don't have the same approach...I'll stick with my current servicing location...but it won't be that convenient.

Any experiences with these LBS' would be appreciated.

They've moved, not in doncaster anymore.

There's also LeTour in Ringwood, and Cycle Science in Mitcham and
Goldcross in Knox, and Bicycle Superstore in Nunawading, there's two
on the corner of Warragul Rd and Toorak Rd/Burwood hwy too, and a few
others I can't recall the names of.

Can't comment, I work at one of them p/t, so my opinion is not
unbiased.

From Mont Albert? Grab a zone 1 ticket, and jump on an inbound train;
it's just 20 minutes (plus waiting time).

My Usenet From: address now expires after two weeks. If you email me, and
the mail bounces, try changing the bit before the "@" to "usenet".

Didn't say they were in Doncaster...they're on Doncaster road in Balwyn East...a stones throw from my new place. They look pretty reasonable, experienced staff, bit of a family type feel...

Thanks, some of these are a bit far away. If the 3 local ones don't work out, I'll check some of these out, or stick to my more city-central LBS'.

Which one? Just curious...

Yeah, I'll do that if the others don't work out, but ideally, somewhere 2 minutes away would be better.

more like 'who *wouldn't* want this?'

"I am looking for a LBS who give **** service and charges like a
wounded bull"

FWIW. I can report that I was extremely pleased last time I dealt with
BikePro. I bought some new wheels that have turned out great. I never
heard of the brand and "trusted" their recommendation and can report
that I'm rapt with the wheels. They were also very helpful and
professional. They went out ot their way to pickup some other problems
with my bike when they were fitting the new wheels. I had literally
just got the bike back from a service from another LBS. They pointed
out several problems and basically fixed them for free.

I will definitely deal with them again.

Thanks Dave, sounds like the sort of place I'm after. I'll check em out.

I can speak highly of Cycle works Box Hill. Nothing ever seems like too much trouble, and they are very courteous and helpful.....also don't seem to have too many 14 year old boys who don't seem to know or care too much about bikes fixing/servicing bikes like some othe LBS's i know.

I've dealt with all three & will comment as follows:

BikePro - has some good stuff for cheap. They need a bigger workshop (or a workshop for that matter - seem to wrench on the shop floor) I haven't had any work done there myself tho.

Cycleworks - go here if you need Campy servicing. They've always seemed pretty honest with their servicing for me - don't overservice & only replace bits if they really need to be replaced.

Top Gear - good friendly staff. Wrenches seem to be okay, Shimano specialists tho. If triathlon is your thing then they are the better shop.
