Tan sidewalls were "cool" in the late 70' early 80's. Although they
weren't actually "tan", they just didn't dye the rubber on the sidewalls
and the tire cords showed through. Basically, they looked like sew-ups
which at the time were still associated with TOTL bikes.

The problem with these was the same with sew ups though. without the
black, the rubber was more vulnerable to UV and the side walls would
seem to evaporate, leaving bare cords. Unless you took the same care of
them as sew-ups. I know. I used to use them a lot, and the sidewall
would disappear long before the tread did.

I think this is more the reason why they went out of style more than
simple fashion.
