Moving BB shell 1" forward: Effect?

  1. I posted this in alt.mountain-bike and somebody suggested posting it
    here.... so here it is:

    Tore out the threads on my Maverick magnesium BB monolink and they're sending me
    another one on warranty.

    But I note that this year Maverick has redesigned their link so that it is
    aluminum i-beam construction instead of a magnesium box. Part of the redesign
    has been to move the BB shell about an inch forward of where it was on the old
    mag version.

    I'm thinking that even though they're sending me a new monolink, that it's days
    are probably numbered just as the old one's were.

    Given that, I'm thinking about laying out the money for one of the new alu ones
    just so I don't have another failure hanging over my head.

    But I have no clue as what moving the BB spindle an inch forward will do the
    handling of my frame - which was built around the old one.

    I'm assuming that Maverick has redesigned their frame geometry around the new
    link - but that's only an assumption.

    Anybody care to speculate?

    IMO, if you install a longer stem and move the seat forward an inch,
    the only effect will be that downhills will seem slightly steeper and
    more squirrely while climbing will become slightly more stable whether
    seated or standing.

    It will make the effective seat tube angle a bit shallower, and it will
    shift the weight balance forward just a bit when standing to pedal,
    that's about it. Doesn't strike me as a big change. If you run your bars
    relatively high, you may prefer the shallower effective angle, and if
    you don't have a leg clearance problem (to the bars) when standing, that
    probably won't bother you, either.

    Can you provide photos of the new and old systems? In addition to the
    handling concerns, I wonder if the relationship between pivot point and
    bottom bracket will change if you mix the two systems. That might affect
    the movement of the suspension, especially it's sensitivity to
    pedal-induced bob.

    I finally got around to doing the obvious and got hold of Maverick's tech
    support guy.

    I had assumed that the redesigned the frame around the new link.

    I was wrong. Same frame, new link.

    So I guess that disposes of any concern I had about it messing up the bike's
    geometry.

    If you're wondering what the heck this thing is in the first place, I cannot
    find a pic that shows it. Both Maverick and Seven's sites only show photos
    taken from the drive side - where the chain wheels hide the link.
