DEATHS from the killer superbug MRSA could double in the
next five years, scientists warned yesterday.
For the lethal strain is becoming resistant to ALL drugs.
Research into Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus in
eight countries shows it is even fending off vancomycin -
the last known antibiotic to kill
it.
MRSA causes surgical wound infections and has killed
thousands of hospital patients.
Up to 5,000 people a year are thought to die from hospital
infections.
The study at Bath and Bristol universities, published in a
leading journal, examined 101 strains of the bug in eight
countries, including the UK.
Author Dr Mark Enright said: "We could see the mortality
rate double over the next five years."
