My Carrera Crossfire feels so heavy!

I have just bought my first bike since childhood. I wanted something that I could use on the lanes and towpaths as well as in town. I live in a hilly area and needed a fairly lightweight bike. I bought the Crossfire off the internet, but it feels much heavier than the 12 kilos it has as its stated weight. I intend to see if I can sell it secondhand and start again. Can anyone suggest a good alternative bike that won't totally break the bank.

I am looking at spending about £500, I am not sure with the weight, but I guess around 10.5 kilos.
