NBC has announced it has picked up a series called "The Biggest Loser." It's somewhat akin to "Big Diet," which aired in the UK and chronicled the weight loss challenge of multiple people. The difference is that "Loser" is going to employ (ready?) "medically-sound" weight loss methods and help people avoid surgery. This brief article mentions that Caroline Rhea will be hosting.
And a Zap2It piece goes into a little more detail. You see, the series is supposed to be "inspirational" - think lots of grotesque "before" shots and glamorous "after" ones. Will there be train wrecks? Sure. Triumphs? Sure. Scripted pap? You bet.
Here we have yet another TV show that will undoubtedly let people walk away with a bad impression of fat people. It's such pap.
"Reality TV" *rolls eyes* TRULY IS A CANCER SPREADING ACROSS U.S. NETWORK PRIMETIME. It's pathetic. God, you'd think people in the television industry would try all they could to suffocate the reality flame. Maybe Jennifer Aniston (for example) shouldn't rave about whatever reality TV show float her boat because she's praising a show that takes the food out of the mouths of actors, writers, etc. just because she's successful now. What if SHE were still strugling in 2004 and had the added pressure of even getting a show on the TV schedule w/ the unoriginal reality genre as competition?

<crosspost snipped> There was a version of this on Discovery Health, I think, or maybe Life Network, her in Canada. It was called Taking it Off. It ran for three seasons, so far. I enjoyed it. They weren't censored on what methods people could use. One guy tried to use cigarettes as an appetite suppressant. Can't be any worse than The Swan, right? Michelle wondering what scripted pap is

People learn by example. Will they have any low carbers?
When will the show be broadcast? If they just started filming, it could take a year or two to get results.
