If I didn't cross the "T", I apologise. It might be because I did the
photo captions at 4am in my hotel room...

Jeff never needed excuses like that. And he did the captions at 5am, in
a phone booth!

Wait, no, he'd be on deadline, so 3am would be more impressive, right?

And with a hangover,

That is an unfair comparison; the CN blimp had an extensive
pharmacopia including state of the art stimulants.

I appreciate even an back-handed comparison to Jeff...

....but he's a writer and I'm a shooter (he doesn't work the hours I do),
he gets to walk away from the competition every now and then (big
difference between working road and track), he can call in his stuff
from anywhere (no internet at the velodrome, so I had to go back to the
hotel), and sleep deprivation maybe makes him more 'edgy'. Photographers
get back to the room at midnite and doze off at 2am face down and
drooling on the bed covers with an index finger keying in a million
space bar inputs in Adobe Bridge or Photoshop. 4am for me is setting the
alarm two hours early to get the chosen photos resized, sent and
captions done before breakfast on the run and another 16 hours at the
velodrome.

Sydney is a great venue for this event, but I got spoiled in Manchester.
24 hour Internet, Wal-Mart/ASDA next to track, most of the logistics
scoped out from multiple years attending. My last time in Sydney was for
the Games in 2000, so I wasn't as comfortable or prepared for the
current state of working at this venue. The Bankstown Sports Club
Travelodge where I stayed is a 24 hour hotel and casino - food choices
at 11pm being a BIG selling point.

I don't drink - coffee or alcohol - and Coca-Cola products were not
available at the track or hotel, so whatever the snack bar above the
slot machine area could put together at 11pm (lunch for me), like
Gatorade and a water chaser on top of a ham sandwich and fruit salad
were all the sleep prevention aids I had.

My pal Rob Upton and wife Donna from down Canberra way (friend from
Masters and the Paralympics) saved my ass on Saturday with a cold Coke
late in the afternoon, and I can't say enough about having the "Handle
Bar Tavern" on site at the Dunc Gray Velodrome for a rare chance to get
a meal (even if they were overwhelmed by the onslaught of staff and
riders any time there were a few minutes between events in the Masters
program).

Dominique Sioul of France was a saint - inviting me at the last minute
to the Awards Banquet (I was heading for my room to do more work) which
meant I had time to socialize a bit.

And I can't say enough about my friends from the States (Terry Roach,
Cindy Goodman, Ann Marie Love, Stephen Hill and his lovely wife) who
know how I work - kidnapped me every now and then for some conversation,
free advice and time not thinking about deadlines...

My shooting partner from Manchester, Steve Walton, is sorely missed.
Masters events are really fun for me, but age-based stuff is a
death-march on some days and a bear to shoot as a team, let alone solo.
Doing this by myself again after six years with help was an eye-opener.

I will definitely need to re-think the logistics before next year.
