need advice on buying a road bike

Hey All,

I just signed up for a sprint triathalon, but I don't own a road bike...or any bike for that matter. In fact, I haven't been on one for 3 years. Ambitious arn't I?? Any model suggestions would be much appreciated. I'm willing to buy new or used (I'm from the Bay Area, CA). I'm female and 5'3". I really want to try to spend less than $500. Is that even possible? It doesn't sound like it from the bike shops I've been to.

Any advice is appreciated.

Try to borrow or rent one.
