I've been searching and comparing couple bikes to do the job for; a long weekend ride, touring, and fast commute. I tested Soma Double Cross, Gunnar crosshair, and Waterford (not sure which one). For the money and quality I may buy Gunnar(they use Waterford frame), but spending big $$ on a bike I wanna make sure this is the bike I want.
I went to my LBS and was quoted,
1. Soma Double Cross---$450 frame and fork---$1900 complete bike
2. Gunnar Cross Hair---$975 frame and fork---$2500 complete bike
3. Waterford full dura ace $3500

Please drop me an advice or suggestion for any other bikes out there....thanks

Have you checked out the Trek 520? For 1000 clams, it's pretty well equipped. I have used mine for all the jobs you described. I have made some upgrades and modifications to the parts on mine, but it's a nice frame.
