Hi,
I'm new to this forum and (soon to be) new to road bike riding. I've ridden mountain bikes for a number of years, but I have a 100 mile charity ride coming up and I think a road bike will definitely be the way to go. Problem is I'm 6'8" with a 38" inseam, so its tough to find a bike that fits. Also, can't spend a fortune on a custom bike. I'd like to spend about $1000 if possible.
The closest I've got has been a 63cm Cannondale which was tall enough with the seatpost way up. I'd have to go really short and high with the stem though to make it more comfortable. Does a stem like that even exist? Is it a bad idea to buy a bike that just "sort of" fits, bearing in mind that I'm not going to be doing regular long rides or racing.
I heard that Cannondale used to sell 66cm framesets, but not anymore. I'd love to find one of these if anybody has any leads. I'd really appreciate it if you would give me a heads up if you see something like that for saleon your travels, be it in your bike store or in the classifieds. Thanks so much for any leads/advice.

btw I'm in California, but of course am willing to pay to get the right bike/frame shipped to me.
