Hi everyone, I am Karen. I am new to all this cycling stuff :) My brother invited me to join him and his wife a month ago and it was exciting to say the least. :) I still have to buy my own bike, any suggestions? :D

Since I have decided to pursue biking, I suddenly realized I might need health insurance for this? I mean you know, biking on the road or the trails and stuff--accidents might happen. I am currently looking at this http://www.medibank.com.au/ and was wondering if any of you are with them? If not, I'm looking forward to your suggestions.

Here's to making new friends and learning more about cycling! :D

Welcome to the forums, Karen.

What type of biking do you think you will be doing? Will you only be riding on smooth paved roads and bike paths, or will you solely being riding off-road on rough terrain, or would you be doing some mixture of both?

How and where you intend to ride your bike will be a big factor on the type of bike you purchase, whether it be a road bike, a hybrid bike, or a mountain bike.

Hi Karen.

You are obviously in AU but you didn't say where.

I reckon it pays to join a cycling advocacy like Bicycle NSW or Bicycle Vic etc. http://www.bicyclensw.org.au/home

As part of your menbership you will have Public Liability insurance and personal injury insurance. The liability insurance is most important to me. Its up to $25M. Check out (don't solely rely on) the injury insurance as its pretty weak.

Other benefits are magazines mailed to you, your helping promote cycling to the broader community and various organised rides (although expensive & not for everyone).

try one of these bikes

Schwinn Vestige for city riding

Giant Innova for almost every type of riding.

regarding health insurance in Australia there is http://www.nib.com.au/ http://www.medibankcom.au/ and liability insurance like scott mentioned.
