need help with a screw-on cassette!?

if it's screw on , it's a freewheel. No upgrade to 9 speed.

There were a few 8-speed freewheel systems so it could be. Cassettes slide on and some models have a screw-on smallest sprocket so you might be mistaking that for a screw-on freewheel. If it's a Shimano cassette hub then a 9-speed cassette will slide right on, if it's a Campy cassette hub then you'll have a bigger job, but it can be done.

You gotta figure out if it's a freewheel or a cassette. If freewheel, no upgrade to 9.

If it's 8-speed Shimano Uniglide cassette (last cog screws on), but it's not Hyperglide compatible, you will have to swap to a Hyperglide freehub body to upgrade to 9-speed.

If it's 8-speed Shimano Uniglide, and it's got a Hyperglide compatible freehub body (threading for both uniglide and Hyperglide cassettes), then you can put a 9-speed Hyperglide cassette on it.
