For cheap they're tough to beat. 32 euros/night. I haven't stayed in one,
but they're apparently popular with euro vacationers. Not a whole lot bigger
than a sleeper on a train, and the bathroom & shower are outside the room,
but supposedly very clean.

like an automated motel 6 run by robots (motel 6 is owned by the
same french company). you need a credit card, though, since you
reserve a room by phone using a credit card, your card then gets
you in the parking lot gate and then into the hotel, where you
are issued your bill and room password, which is how you open the
room door. petite dejeuner is optional, just coffee, bread & jam
on a picnic table, but i always checked out and went looking for
a good patisserie for breakfast. just love them [censored] d'abricot!

room is equipped with a double bed & single bunk overhead, tv
over the triangular desk in one corner and triangular sink in
another. tv remote is bolted to the bedpost.

formule1 builds hotels by stacking modules --- rooms, stairways,
showers/toilets --- up to 3 stories high, usually near industrial
parks or shopping centers on the outskirts of french cities.

the showers and toilets are robotic. once you go inside and lock
the door, when you leave it will lock the door and then sanitize
the toilet or shower stall with jets of steam, hot water, and
liquid soap, dry itself, and then unlock the door, all in about 4
minutes. there seems to be one shower/toilet block in the center
of every group of 9 room blocks, so a shower or toilet is always
within 50 feet or so.

no air conditioning, which can be annoying in southern france in
the summer (they have another chain with air cond. that cost
another 4-5 euros/night).

if there is any kind of big event going on in the area, be sure
to call ahead and reserve a room well in advance. during the
tour de france, it was sometimes hard to find rooms anywhere near
the start or finish towns, and all the formule1 rooms were often
nabbed by radio & tv crew folks.

i found them a good value for the money, since i was rarely in a
hotel room except to sleep during my entire trip.
