New Coker Owner Questions

Mount it like this <http://gallery.unicyclist.com/albuq60>

Rollback isn't hard if you've got strong legs, but most people seem to
like the standard mount better. Rollback mount means you automatically
learn to idle a coker though. Standard mount is easier to do with
shorter cranks put on it, I can only just do a rollback with 110 cranks
and it certainly isn't easy.

The key thing to do is step a long way up, push with your back leg to
help yourself get on. It's almost like jumping up a little bit. You can
also put a bit of weight on the back pedal without rolling the wheel, as
it's such a heavy wheel.

The next thing to do is learn to idle it, which isn't hard at all on
normal cranks and is a little bit harder on short cranks.

Oh and then putting on short cranks means you can get it even faster,
20mph+ is possible with 110 cranks.

Welcome to the Cokering community.

My suggestion on mounts would be to learn to mount at a moderate jogging
pace, which isn't as difficult as it first sounds and is actually easier
with shorter cranks. As you are gently jogging forward, aim to take
your leap just as the pedal you are mounting onto is coming up to the 3
o'clock position. The wheel's momentum will carry you upwards and
gently over the seat, with plenty of time to place your other foot on
the other pedal. The trick is to balance the weight you place on the
upcoming pedal compared with the momentum of man and machine, so that
you DON'T roll back, or even come to a stop - just let your momentum
carry you forwards. When learning this mount WEAR LEG ARMOUR, unless
you want to scar your shins/calfs with unsightly pedal scrapes - been
there, done that, got the scars to prove it.

If you start riding with other Coker riders and all mount
simultaneously, you don't want to be behind the rider who does the
rollback - especially if there is an audience of interested bystanders
who are usually all too eager to voice any criticism of your technique
while you lie in a bleeding heap.

Cokering is probably just about as much fun as you can have with your
clothes on, well, possibly with the exception of freefall skydiving and
skiing - enjoy.
