So what is the story with these new forums inside the forums? You know, like rec.racing.something... I'm just curious who these people are and where the forums came from. And so many of them are using real names...and the forums themselves seem to have been around for a while...

easyrider,

Those are mirrors of Usenet forums. A BLOODY GREAT idea as having the huge readership of usenet with the ease/convenience of a web forum is the best of both worlds IMO.

Just out of interest (to the mods):

* is it OK to post in the usenet groups now?
* if so, what does it give as the name and reply email? (I want to double check befor using it, for spam-avoidance reasons)

They are just a mirror of news groups like aus.bicycles rec.bicycles.racing etc... i'm still getting the bugs out of the feed. In the next day or so, you will be able to reply to the groups from this forum, ATM you can only read them.

cheers!

You will have an extra section in your profile for a usnet email addy and display name, its good for avoiding spam.

You'll be able to reply once i've finished doing a few more mods, i dont want any scum bag spammers to hijack this forum and use it to send out spam :D

Most of the feeds are still updating, they should be caught up with in the next couple of hours.

cheers

I notice that whenever someone posts something in these embedded forums it shows up in ours as a new message. Any chance we can get rid of this, I'm going into forums expecting something new and I'm getting some bikenet.rides thing which isn't likely to help a South African!!

They also wont be showing up in the search function.

I have fixed this problem, when you select the new posts link it now only displays posts from within the forum.

I've also added two links below that one which gives you access to 'new usenet posts' and 'todays usenet posts'

cheers!

You should be able to reply to the news groups now (except for rec.bicycles.marketplace) ......your email addy will not be used. I'll add a field in users profiles to allow them to enter a bigus/different email addy soon!

cheers!

I tried to throw a couple of responses out there. No luck. Program "timed out."

Also, any idea why they have a ton of posts but they all only show a few views? More people have to be viewing them then that? Maybe it is only showing views generated through this site?

Thats right, its only showing views from the forum. Posts have to be approved by me at the moment, this wont be the case in about 20 minutes when I have some decent anti-spam rules setup :D

cheers!

Because we are dealing with news groups here, you should 'quote'the message your replying to (remember the forum isnt a threads type setup like newsgroups) this will make sure your post is inserted into the correct location.

cheers!
