Hi,

First post, looking foreward to many more. Long time runner and I thought I'd get into cycling so that I can do a couple triathlons.

I was talking to some friends and they suggested a 07 Specialized Allez Comp Double. $1400

But then I found a 06 Specialized Tarmac Comp. $1000. Never ridden, brand new.

Both prices are without pedals, shoes, helmet, etc.

Both are red, both look good to me. Both have never been ridden, would be brand new either way just one is last years model. Both would be the 56cm sizing.

Just seeing what the primary differences between the two models are besides the frame (on that note, which one is better) and looking for advice on which one to go with. I don't mind spending a little more money to get something of higher quality so that I wouldn't have to upgrade in the future. $1500 is my ceilling.

Thanks for your help guys! Looking foreward to spending some time here!

I have an Allez Comp but I crashed it last November and the frame is toast. I can still use it on the trainer but no longer outside. I fear the tubes will break since they're bend rather badly... Anyway...

The Ultegra-equipped machine from 2005 was GREAT to ride and I really liked the vibration dampening inserts.

It depends how much you ride. If you plan on doing a lot of riding (more than 3 times a week, more than 3 hours at least 2 times a week) I would aim high and get the bike with the best components. My 2 cents...

The Tarmac is a 'higher' model than the Allez. The Allez is aluminum, and the Tarmac is carbon. Both probably have 105 groupos. Plus, the Tarmac retails for over $2k, so $1k is great deal.

Comparing the two, the Tarmac is more of a racing bike while the Allez is more of a recreational bike. Your looking to do Tris, so the Tarmac would suit your needs.

Are you able to test ride them? I would expect that the Tarmac would ride smoother and faster.

I'd buy the Tarmac and save the $500 for pedals and gear. The extra gear, pedals, and shoes can get expensive.
