I'm searching the web looking for some feedback on the Schwinn Ranger bicycles that I purchased from Target in April 2004 for my kids 11 yrs. & 14 yrs.
We paid $120 a piece for the bikes and thought they were fairly good quality for what the kids needed (riding up and down the block etc... no motocross or the like)
Yesterday the chain stuck between gears on my daughters bike while she was riding down the street and she went over the handle bars and skinned up the right side of her body pretty badly... Thank heavens for bike helmets. She was not seriously hurt.
After this incident, my son noted that he was having issues with his bike as well. He said the brake lines were already fraying and that the handle bars are coming loose and the wheels are going out of alignment.
My question is this... Has anyone else encountered this problem? Do you think the problems are indicative of poor assembly (I'm guessing some 'mook' at Target was hired to put bikes together.) or it's just a sub-standard bicycle to begin with?
We're obviously in the market for 2 new bikes and am also wondering what might be recommended in the $100-$200 range.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
