Well done, Oklahoma,

A new law just passed in this state makes it an offence for motorists to pass within 3 feet of a cyclist.

Here in Cape Town legally we have a meter wide cycling area(sort of an imaginary line) but cars invade that space when the road narrows or passing on coming trafic. Last year on my 5 day cross country cycle we had 18 wheelers passing our shoulders within touching distance, travelling in access of 120km/h, scary stuff. Not that we have the policing required to enforce a law like the one above but we can only dream.

Tennessee provides that a motorized vehicle will pass with a safe margin. Some people have an amazing interpretation of what a safe distance is.
I doubt that a specific distance will ever take the place of courteousy and common sense.
However any positive steps are better than none.
I am presently working on some new boating safety(proposed) regulations to submit to the state.
