You're going to have to go used or bikesdirect for a $500 road bike.
If you want new and don't mind upping your budget, the Trek 1.1 and Felt Z100 are probably some of the best entry level bikes for a US buyer.

Bikes Direct has plenty in your price range, but if you're new to cycling and working on bikes and don't have any experienced friends either, I'd recommend against using them. You'd be better off purchasing from a local shop that can offer you test rides and advice.

Obviously there's always the used market, but, at least around here, that seems to be slim pickings through lots of grossly overpriced [censored].
