Bog standard run of the mill copy, but read carefully. Whole language vs. phonetics? Or simply being helpful in assisting the public pronounce stuff? :p

Casper wins, Hincapie leads

STRASBOURG, France A Frenchman has won the first stage of the Tour de France. Jimmy Casper held off Australia's Robbie McEwen and Germany's Erik Zabel (ZAH'-bul) in the finishing sprint to capture the 114-mile stage through Strasbourg.

Opening prologue winner Thor Hushovd sliced open his arm and bled profusely after being squeezed against the barriers that line the route in the final sprint. The Tour doctor says Hushovd may need stitches but is expected to continue.

American George Hincapie (HIHN'-kuh-pee) has grabbed the overall lead by finishing with the lead pack. Hincapie finished second in yesterday's prologue.

Just looks like fairly standard "news wire" type feeds to help the
radio/TV journos get the pronunciation vaguely correct. I regularly
hear pronunciations on the radio that make me cringe, but how Radio
National got "Canley Vale" from Canning Vale the other day I don't
know!

No-one, not even Auntie's eggspurts, can seem to get that footy player's
name right - Lee MonTAGna!! Should be 'MonTANya' for fsck's sake. Makes me
cringe every time I hear it.

Camporeale becomes Camparelli...

As SCOSE seem to think that - "accepted anglicisations are: Bilbao
[bil-BAY-oh], cacao [kuh-KAY-oh], curacao [kyooh-ruh-SAY-oh]" then I'll
not bother. Talk about the blind leading the blind! I had hoped they
might put an end to Fran "Glottal Stop" Kelly on Radio National's
morning show, but there's more than just her pronunciation and diction
that pisses me off about her. I'd better stop before I really get going
on a rant :)

Ditto regarding that ***** that hosts Counterpoint.

I had to have a quick check on the RN web site to remind myself who you
were referring to as there is also a BBC Radio 4 programme called
Counterpoint that I used to listen to. Care to take the challenge and
see which Counterpoint host is the most annoying git?

I think the UK one will win by a mile!

Graeme

[1] Different show, same irritating host, the UK Counterpoint is
currently off air and the BBC only has "Listen Again" for a week after
broadcast.

Hmmm.... that does put a different light on it, but now we're getting
away from the personality/speech modes to the "objectionable views"
aspect. Duffy might win on that scale, but Sherrin romps home on the
"irritating to even listen to" scale. Have you listened to the BBC link
above yet? I bet you can't sit through a whole programme without
thinking "STFU you little ****!"
