NewB Question: Clipless Pedals

I just bought my first mountain bike which came with Wellgo clipless pedals:

I am having trouble getting my cleats to snap into the pedals. I tried adjusting the tension on the "jaw mechanism" but that didn't help.

Any suggestions?

Maybe a stupid questions, but are your shoes designed for these type of pedals??

Yes, the shoes have SPD cleats.

I figured out the problem. I mounted the cleats backwards on the shoe. )
