ok guys and gals i'm new to the site and i would really appreciate any help. I am just getting into biking (being and old tennis player my knees are shot) as i was advised to because of my knees i was wondering(looking on ebay and all) what is the difference betweeen groupings today and yesterday(despite the speeds offered) is it better to go with 105's from yesteryear or is it better to go with soras or tiagra from today( being of better technology) any help or advise would be very welcome. i'm talking about the 105's from the eighties early nineties. Thanks

Modern tiagra is probbaly better than old 105. In my opinion, the big advantage is in the better cassette design.
That being said, the old stuff still works adequately.

And the STI's. 105 from the late 80's to early 90's is going to have down tube shifters.

ok thank you very much guys i'm thinking about a used bike to see if i enjoy riding before shelling out the big bucks so i will probably buy a used early nineties. Probably end up spending $750 or so and the information i gathered it looks like 105's is the answer so thank you 🙂
