Quoted message said:I needed to start exercising and lose some weight. I decided to do
some neighborhood walking. I started walking a mile. Then upped it to
2 miles. Then 4. Although I have walked as many as 7 miles in one day,
the average is 4-5.
It's working out very well, with one slight exception: Long walks
result in blisters. Are these an inevitability? I've got two sore
spots on my right foot, and my fear is that they're not going to heal
if I continue walking a lot. Will it be dangerous? How do I prevent
blisters? How can I get these to heal? Somebody suggested "moleskin."
What's that?
I wear these (very comfortable) New Balance shoes, if that's
applicable:

Any help you can offer will be appreciated. Thanks!
I'm a newbie to running, but from experience, I know a couple things about
blisters. How do your shoes fit? Have they been fitted properly by a
professional? Any spots that rub? Socks. Are you wearing cotton? If yes,
STOP. Cotton caused me to have really really awful blisters after just a 2
mile jog. Get some synthetic running socks.
Treatment. Moleskin is a sort of sticky pad that cushions the blister and
prevents more chafing/rubbing. In my experience, they didn't work well for
me, but maybe because of the size of blister, or that I was running and not
walking, and location of blister. The moleskin didn't hold in one spot,
slid halfway off, and doubled the blister size. What did work for me was to
drain the blister (although I've been told you're not supposed to do this),
and paint that "second skin", the liquid bandage, over the blister.
If you are wearing good quality socks and shoes that fit properly, you
really shouldn't be getting blisters.
