Hey everyone,

Guess my retarded thread name got your attention :D
My name is Shawn, I'm 20 and an architecture student at SP. Recently I've been getting fat, I stand 170cm tall and 80KG, I regularly work out at the gym for upper body muscles but nothing much for fat burning. So its either running, which i hate, or cycling, which I've always loved.

Ok to the point...

I've mostly ridden BMXs and MTB just for fun, but I'm now interested in Road Biking. But the thing is I have not a single clue about road bikes. I have a tight budget since I'm a student so probably $500 would be ideal, I'm not sure of what i can get with that, but hopefully something respectable and competent, may be even 2nd hand.

Here are some questions off the top of my head:

- How much do road bikes range from? Cheapest to Most expensive.

- Are there cheap bikes under $500 and have a good weight? Not to light that it cost a bomb and not too heavy as well.

- I've seen many threads on the parts of the bikes and people buying and changing them, is there a need for regular maintainance besides the cleaning?

- How do i even get started in the sport?

- Any good bike shops that can help my budget?

Thanks,
Ride Safe :D

I would definitely look at second hand as you can get some good deals. Try ebay or craigslist. You wont be able to find anything newer but road bikes 10-15 years old are still very good to get started on. I would say that road bikes start from around $200 going anywhere up to $30000 sometimes more. You can ride a bike without maintenance but just like a car, it will eventually break down and end up costing more.
The best way to get started is to get a bike and ride. You could find that your local area has a nice cycling club that also has other new riders and that you could meet up with them and learn the basics of road cycling.

Go to a good bike shop and find approximately what you like in bike type and get fitted. Once this is done you are armed with the knowledge of what size and type bike you are looking for. This makes finding a used bike much easier.
Try and stay away from bikes with obsolete components since you may end up having to upgrade to replace worn out or damaged parts.
Of course with the fitting thing you will want to stay away from department store, one size fits all bikes.
You can find a decent used bike for $500.00 or so depending on what your expectations are. You might even find a used bike at that shop.
* Remember color is the most important thing when buying a bike.

* Note unrealistic sarcasm.

I would suggest hitting ebay, craigslist and other classified websites. For $500 you can get a reasonable second hand bike, you might score something that is a few years old that originally sold for 3 or 4 times your $500. Secondhand bikes devalue fast, just because you buy something second hand, doesn't mean you're buying junk. Take this one for example;

Thanks for the find ambal..
yes i do agree that second hand dosent mean its lousy or anything, its just that the owner dosent want it or wants to upgrade :D
and most likely i will get a 2nd hand one ...judging from the amount of cash and experience i have :D thanks once again :D

Do you guys know any shops in SG that sells 2nd hand bikes? like one that might be specialised in 2nd hand ones :D
