Non-Lycra shorts & platform pedal shoes

Looking for some casual-type shorts (not too short though) that arn't
figure-hugging lycra but are still breathable. Where from?

Also wondering what shoes are good for platform pedals (DMR V8). I
understand they should have a stiff but soft sole so the pins dig in. Which
brand should I be looking at? Would be better if I can find them on the high
street and try them on.

Mountain bikers baggies are apparently thought by young people to be
hip, cool and stylish. I have a pair, and have to confess I feel
embarrassed whenever I put them on - to my ancient eyes they look the
epitome of nae class. They are however comfortable and practical, with
lots of useful pockets. Mine are by Endura.

> Also wondering what shoes are good for platform pedals (DMR V8).

Swap the pedals for a decent pair of SPDs or Eggbeaters. You'll never
regret it.

Not sure what you mean. Surely the alternative; Lycra is more embarrasing?
BTW what's 'nae class'?

Perhaps another day, any good shoe recommendations?

How about these?
http://www.bournesports.com/~sa_webapp/run.asp?page=7190

In the days before I switched to SPD's I used to wear what the hiking
and climbing fraternity call "Approach shoes". Quite stiff but a bit
wide. Also used to end up with oily laces...

Something not unlike these:

Happy biking!

No, not at all. I'm quite relaxed in lycra. Why not? it's just
comfortable and functional, and even looks smart.

> BTW what's 'nae class'?

I think you English say 'naff'. Wholly without any semblance of style,
panache, elegance or taste.

Not for pedals like that. They're just shin-eaters; I wouldn't use them
at all.

Ah, but only for other people. Many off-bike lycra wearers are oblivious
to the fact that everyone can see a perfect outline of their *****.

Other wearers are aware but don't care. A small subset of them wear lycra
simply because they don't have to keep opening their mac to innocent
bystanders.

They'll have a bloody hard job seeing the outline of my ***** when I'm in my
Lycra cycling shorts ;-)

Wiggle.co.uk do some longer-length, breathable running
shorts which might be what you're looking for.

Picking up the shoe question... Riding both BMX and MTB's with platform
pedals I'm very picky about shoes that grip well, I try on many many pairs
before I find ones I like. Vans make good shoes but have recently become
more fashionable and consequently the soles son't work so well. The
traditional waffle sole versions grip excellently but many people find them
too thin to ride all day in (I don't). Alternatively Etnies also make good
shoes, these are thicker and more sturdy than the vans but still grip well,
they all pretty much have the same sole pattern but onesdesigned by bikers
(instead of skaters) include the 'Rooftop' and 'Throttle' models.

And mine! :) I have to say, not ALL cycling shorts make blokes quite
that visible either... not that I've carried out a specific study into
this, you understand!!!!!!!!!!!

Is that true? I always thought the padding solved that problem - but
then perhaps it depends how big your ***** is and how much padding you
have in your shorts.

This once featured in a review of a pair of cycling shorts. The closing
comment was that they were a great pair of shorts, exceptionally
comfortable, but you had to be "happy with yourself" to wear them as the
padding was minimalist.

Any outdoor shop should have a range of good quality wicking/breathable
shorts.

Given the big pins on the pedals, a pair of light walking boots to
protect your feet and ankles from gashes.

I do believe some research is called for, to check if these things are visible,
and the *full extent* of the problem. Purely in the interests of science, of
course.

hm. How to put this....

It depends on

a) size (not of the shorts :)
b) color of shorts
c) thickness of short material
d) size and shape of padding

I have some Endura shorts. I don't think anything too obscene is visible
in them if anything.

I did have some blue club shorts (from Impsport). The material was thin
and in the end I binned them since I didn't really feel comfortable wearing
them. The combination of the light color and thinness was especially bad
in the wet.

I also currently have some Assos shorts which are made of a thinner material
than my Endura ones, but are black. These are more comfortable in the heat but
are more revealing (though not so much that I think it's a problem)

In the interests of science, Arthur, you should be posting jpgs, and letting
Velvet, Roos and I know the url so we can check that there isn't a problem.

Surely it's transparency one should be promoting? I'm sure the
Government is always keen to promote transparency...

There are some things better kept hidden. But detailed research should be
carried out to find out which things. ;-)
