NorCal National Champions meet every Saturday at Starbucks in
Sausalito around 7am. After taking the bikes out of the H2's, they
like to pose for about an hour and a half in their kits.

They would like to do a photo this week, so would all NorCal fattie
masters with a national champions jersey for 2004 please stop by.
There will be a 12 mile training ride afterwards.

If you really are a crit pro then you should be man enough to know it's
poor form to pick on those beneath you. It's very 6th grade actually.

That's about 10 miles longer than the Harley posers will be doing before they
load their bikes back onto the trailers.

Off the top of my head here are the people from NorCal of masters age
who won National Championships in 2004, so would therefore qualify to
accept CP's invitation:

Larry Nolan, Peter Allen, Bubba Melcher, Marc Caldwell, Mark Rodamaker,
Lori Nock, Stephen Alfred, me, Christine Thorburn, and the 4 women from
Ofoto who did the Team Pursuit.

Also Jeff Fillerup.

Hey, no offense to the trackies and their 5-10 person National Championship
events, but you left out one of the most deserving winners... Mike
Hutchinson in the 35+ road race. Now from what I've seen, he's a damn good
bike racer.

BTW, what did Peter win?

Sorry, I didn't know about Mike. The others are at least as good as Mike in
the event(s) they won. The number of entrants doesn't really matter if the
best riders in the world, country, or district are racing. Except for the
women's pursuit (I'm not sure how good their time was) the others all rode
very well and most have also confirmed their ability at the World
Championships and in other races.

Points race.

In what kind of race?

You can get some ideas by checking the results (when time and distance are
shown) linked to www.ncnca.org/road.html or at the www.USAcycling.org
website by going to "National Championships", then "Masters", then
"results".

If you were to try bike racing you'd be racing with the Cat. 5 group
initially, preferably the 35+ 4/5 events. You could also race with the 45+
group but they race faster.

thanks for the leads, I'll keep looking but in the first there are very
few that lists times and havent found one that lists time and distance.
The second I cant find the national championships to hit. I'm curious
what the pace would be like in a 30 mile road race. Tx for any help.

Somewhere between 23-25mph for the groups you'd be racing with. The trick is
you have to be able to go 27+mph (in the draft) during the harder periods.
Average speed is not a good indicator of the difficulty for a road race
because the hills and intensity will vary. The best way to learn about this
is to put yourself on the start line.

< somewhere between 23-25 > thanks for this. Now I'm just trying to go
20 at longer and longer stretches. Only have had a good bike for a
little while now. Speaking of which, time to do it again.

In the Giro di SF crit Masters 35+ average speed is over 25 mph
(including the little uphill that tires all and sundry out except
Larry Nolan).
Overall average speed for a 50 minute crit there -- probably 26 to 27
mph.

On flat terrain, probably typical is 23-28mph.

Pace in mph is a bit irrelevant, unless you're out on your own.

Wearing a masters DC jersey in an Elite race? That's a bit much. What 'till
RVD gets a hold of him!
