We went to the Loppa Peninsula near Alta in August 2000. There was plenty of rain, but also some
fabulous walking days. With Norway you can get well above the Arctic Circle, so 24 hours of daylight
can be the norm. On this particular peninsula there is quite a large ice field so you'd need ropes,
crampons, ice axes etc. The ridges offered some good walking, but as with a lot of Arctic mountain
areas, also some unstable walking too. The Hurtigrute ferry route along the coastline is probably
the best way to get about - Oksfjord is the nearest stop to Loppa.

The mossies were nowhere near as bad as the midge - they can be a nuisance but I've never despaired
like I have with the wee highland [censored] insect <grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr......>

Yes - but note that it could get autumnal in the later part of the month.

Not so wee - they're huge. But they don't come in the same numbers as the northern parts of .uk. And
there are none at all above a certain altitude.

It will leave you with a long bus ride. Or maybe train - not sure of routes. Either way, it's very
comfortable.

My best memory is of Jotunheim: think of the best of Scotland, double the size of it, and add a
better climate with mountains big enough to generate a rain shadow. Oh, and glaciated rivers with
great white water. I came home from Bergen after that, and the bus passed through some other
mountain areas, including more extensive glaciated parts.

Mozzies tend to die off as August progresses

Bergen i svery handy for a few good areas, and remember the ferries - you can get to the head of
Sogne Fjord and hence into the Hurrigane/Jotunheim from there. Hardanger and the hills to the north
are a train ride away. There is a delightful area called Stolsheim to the north of Voss. Popped in
there once and its not bad for hut touring. No big peaks but a quiet wild area, rather lovely.

Driving: I did a trip to Tafjord/Sunmøre from Bergen, took an afternoon. most of the next day to get
to near Ålesund. Worth it for the journey alone.

Worst midging I ever had was camping just outside Bergen. However away from the coast you dont get
them - just mozzies, and southern mozzies are nowhere near as bad as northern ones of North American
ones (Arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!)
